How To Use Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Exactly Are Malas And How Do They Work?
Mala, the Sanskrit word for the first prayer beads used for counting mantra recitations, is also known as mala. Malas are commonplace throughout Tibetan Buddhist communities all over all over the world, tied around wrists or hanging from fingers, accompanied by humming recitations of mantras like om mani padme hum, Om tare tuttare ture, or om muni maha muniye saha. They are also known as trengwa in Tibetan. Since a common aspect of Tibetan Buddhist practice is repeating (mentally or in loud voice) certain mantras thousands, or many times, it's beneficial to use the rosary for counting off the number of times you pray, as a kind of spiritual abacus. Even if you're not doing any actual counting, the repetitive repeating of the mantra moving bead by beads through the mala helps be a focus for the mind and help it to relax. A string of 108 beads which is composed of precious, semi-precious and/or seed stones, wood or seeds, is the most frequently used kind of mala. If you are able to perform 100 mantra recitations walking around the mala, repeating a mantra each for every single bead you will be considered to have achieved. The remaining eight beads count as "spare" to compensate for any miscounts or mistakes that you make along the way. There is a head bead that can be found, which is more substantial than all of other beads and is commonly known as "guru bead". But, it serves as the start point of the circuit and is not included among the total of 108. Sometimes, malas contain additional precious stones added at different intervals, such as coral or turquoise, for instance. They can be added at intervals where you can count, like following 27 beads. Counter beads are added, and your total number of beads would be 111, not 108. Also, you can use a smaller mala for prostrations, which is comprised of 27 beads. It is wrapped around your hand and repeated four times. There are other configurations that can be created, like 21 or 22, but this isn't a problem as long as your mala has the capacity to count.
Types of Malas
There are many types of malas, from bone and ivory to lapis-lazuli, sandalwood or crystal or "Bodhi seed" (actually created from Rudraksha seed) or "lotus seed" (actually made of Rattan seeds). There are a myriad of theories on the internet about which mala is appropriate for which kind of prayer. But we don't think it matters what kind you choose to use. We don't believe Tibetans have any distinctions between kinds of malas. Monks or nuns will usually make use of simple malas like wooden ones. Every mala is suitable. It is essential to focus on your spiritual practice, such as prayer and reciting mantras rather than the appearance or value of your mala. Have a look at the top Authentic Tibetan Bracelet for examples.
How Do You Keep And Count Your Malas
We would like to state, as is often true in Tibetan tradition, that there are no strict rules when it comes to malas or the method to count your mantras. Every person does it differently. There are some common ways however they don't alter your intentions or attitude to prayer. If you're praying in your heart and using your mala, then you will be doing the right job! While most sources recommend holding your mala in one hand, some Tibetans suggest placing it in the other. If you're carrying a prayer rod with one hand, while holding your mala and mala in the other, it is easier to carry the mala using your left hand, while holding the prayer rod is held in the right. Begin by holding the "guru" bead, then work your way down. Keep the mala between your thumb (or index finger) and hold it there. Recite the mantra quietly or loudly. Then, move on to the next beads using your thumb. Recite your mantra again, and then repeat. When you get to the guru beads again, you will have accomplished 100 mantras. There is no need to count them all. At this point, the majority of Tibetans do not cross the guru's bead, and instead reverse the direction by changing the mala and starting a new circuit of 100, going back the way they came. Since we don't know why it is, we just do it as a habit and not for any particular reason.
Caring for your Mala
In general your mala will increase in spiritual significance when you use it for mantra recitations and use it in teachings, and perhaps get it blessed by your spiritual guru. Although it's not holy by itself, we still treat it with respect. This means you shouldn't throw it, place it on the ground, or even add objects of everyday use to it. Tibetans utilize their malas to wrap around their wrists, or around their necks. (Although be aware that they're not worn as necklaces, but rather for decoration, or, for self-promotion, to demonstrate the spirituality of one's.) You can hang it high up near your altar, if it isn't in use for long or when you're sleeping. The bookcase we have in the area under the altar is where ours are kept. It's all up to you and your determination to handle it with love and respect, while maintaining a practical, non-extreme attitude.
