How To Make Use Of Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Is Malas?
Mala is Sanskrit for the original Sanskrit names of prayer beads used for counting mantras. All Tibetan Buddhist communities have many malas. They can be worn on the wrists or suspended from fingers. They are also known as trengwa in Tibetan. Because Tibetan Buddhist practice often involves repetition of certain mantras loudly or in a mental way, thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousand times, it's useful to record the number of prayers by using your rosary as a kind of spiritual Abacus. Even if you are not doing any actual counting, the repetitive repeating of the mantra proceeding bead by bead through the mala can help focus and calm the mind. A string of 108 beads is the most well-known type of mala. It can be made out of semi-precious or precious stone, wood, seeds or even bone. If you can perform 100 mantra recitations moving through the mala, repeating a mantra each for every single bead, you are considered accomplished. The additional eight beads count as "spare" to compensate for any mistakes or miscalculations you may make in the process. The head beads are larger than the rest and is sometimes referred to as"guru" beads. However, it is vital to the circuit's start point, and is not included in the total of 108 beads. Malas may contain additional precious stones at various intervals. They may include turquoise or coral. They are often placed at intervals that you can use to count, for instance, after 27 beads for example to make sure that you're only half way through one circuit. You would have the number of beads 111 instead of 108, if you were to add the counter beads. Also, you can make use of a smaller mala for prostrations, which is comprised of 27 beads. It is wrapped around your hand and repeated four times. You can make other combinations (21 or 22 for instance) and it is not a problem so long as your mala is able to count.
Types of Malas
There are numerous kinds of malas. Some are made from bone or ivory, and others are made from lapis lazuli or sandalwood. We've read and seen many theories on the kind of mala that is suitable for this or that kind of prayer, we do not believe that it's important as much what type of mala you use. We also think that Tibetans aren't particularly picky about the types of malas they choose to use. Monks and nuns generally utilize simple and affordable malas, such as wooden malas. It is possible to use any kind of mala that you wish. It is preferential not to think about the appearance or value of your mala, but instead focus in your practice of prayer and reciting mantras. See the top Man Mala for more.
How To Hold And Count With Your Malas
We'd like to make it clear, as Tibetan culture is known that there aren't strict rules about malas, or the process of counting your mantras. Every person approaches it in a different way. There are many ways of doing things however, these don't matter nearly so much as your intentions and attitude to prayer. If you're praying from your heart while using your mala, you are doing what is right! While the majority of sources recommend keeping your mala with one hand however, some Tibetans suggest having it in the other. If you have a prayer wheel in one hand and mala in the second one, it is common to carry the mala with the left hand, and the prayer wheel on the right. The mala can be used by beginning with the bead nearest to the "guru". Place the bead between your thumb and index finger and recite your mantra once out loud or silently. Move on to the next beads using your thumb. Repeat your mantra, and then repeat. When you get to the guru beads once more and you've completed 100 mantras. There is no need to count each one. Most Tibetans will not abandon the guru beads at this stage. They simply turn the mala in the opposite direction, and then begin a new cycle, with 100 mantras. We don't know the reason why this happens, and yet we do it more out of habit than due to any reason.
Caring for your Mala
In general the mala you choose to use will grow in spiritual significance as you utilize it for mantra recitations. You can also use it in teachings, and perhaps have it blessed by your Guru. It's not sacred in and of itself, but it is something that we take care of with reverence. It is therefore not recommended to put it on the flooring or pile everyday objects on it or throw it. Tibetans wear their malas on their necks and wrists even whenever they're not in use. It is not recommended to wear them as a necklace. You can hang it high up near your altar, even if you aren't using it for long periods of time or when you're sleeping. Ours is kept on a specific bookcase beneath our altar. It's entirely up to you to treat it with love and affection while keeping a practical non-extremist, non-confrontational attitude.
