+1 agurmax.

How Do You Use Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Exactly Are Malas Precisely?
Mala is Sanskrit's original word to refer to prayer beads. They are used to count mantra recitations. All Tibetan Buddhist communities have many malas. They can be hung on the wrists or suspended from fingers. They are called trengwa when they're Tibetan. Since a common part of Tibetan Buddhist practice is repeating (mentally or loudly) certain mantras thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of times, it is beneficial to use the Rosary to count off the number of prayers as a kind of spiritual abacus. Even even if you're not counting repeating the mantra bead-by-bead through the mala can help to relax and keep the mind focused. The most well-known type of mala is a string made of 108 beads made of precious or semi-precious stones wood, seeds or even bone. After you've finished 100 mantra recitations, every time you walk around the mala and say a mantra for each of its beads, you're believed to be fully. The remaining eight beads count as "spare" to compensate any errors or miscounts that you make on the way. You will also find a head beadsthat are larger than the other. The head beads are used to compensate for any mistakes or miscounts that you made during the course. Malas may contain additional precious stones added at different intervals, such as coral or turquoise, for instance. These precious stones may be added at times you are able to count, like after 27 beads you'll know you are 1/4 complete in the circuit. The counter beads add another count to your overall bead count, which would be 111 instead 108. Another mala size is suitable for wrist use that has 27 beads. It is used to perform prostrations. It is wrapped around the wrist and then repeated 4 times. It is possible to make various configurations (e.g. 21 or 22). If you are able utilize your mala for counting, that is okay.

Types of Malas
There are many types of malas, ranging from ivory and bone to lapis-lazuli, sandalwood or crystal, or "Bodhi seed" (actually created out of Rudraksha seeds) or "lotus seed" (actually made from rattan seed). While there are many theories as to which mala is best for each type of prayer, we don’t believe it matters. We don't believe Tibetans make much distinctions between kinds of malas. Monks and nuns will generally use very simple and inexpensive malas, like wooden malas. You can choose any kind of mala you like. It is best not to focus on the appearance or value of your mala but rather focus in your practice of praying and reciting mantras. See the top Bodhi Seed Mala Prayer Beads for more.

How Do You Hold And Count Using Your Malas
As is often the case in Tibetan culture, we wish to emphasize that there are no rules about malas or the way to measure mantras. Everyone is different. There are many ways to pray however, it is as much as the way you pray or what your intentions are. You are doing the right thing if you pray with your heart and make use of your mala. Although most sources suggest holding the mala in one hand, some Tibetans recommend using the other. It is common to have the mala on one hand, with your prayer wheel on the other. Begin by holding the "guru" bead, and move down. The mala should be placed between your thumb (or index finger) and keep it there. Repeat the mantra silently or loudly. After that, move on to the next bead , and repeat the mantra again. Once you are at the next guru bead , you will have completed 100 mantras. At this point, most Tibetans do not pass over the guru's bead, instead, but reverse it by turning the mala around, and then re-starting a circuit of 100, going back to where they came from. It's unclear what the reason is. We do this because we're used to it.

Caring for your Mala
In general, your mala will grow in spiritual significance when you utilize it in mantra recitations. You can also use it in teachings, and possibly be blessed by your Guru. Although it's not as holy as a Buddha's scripture or statue but it's still something that we revere. This means you should not put it on the ground or pile up everyday objects on it or throw it away. When not using their malas, Tibetans wear them on their wrists or hang them around their necks. They're not intended to be worn as a necklace or for self-deprecation, instead, it is a method to display the spirituality. If you're not using it for a while or are sleeping, you can hang yours on a high, clean location near your altar. It's on a specific bookcase beneath our altar. It's all up to your intention and how you deal with it.
